About the Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO)

A description for the registry for patents, designs and trademarks in Norway

The dataset is available in JSON format. Its usage is free, and users are expected to cite the source and acknowledge the copyright in accordance with the applicable guidelines.
More technical information about formats, access, and more can be found under the top menu "Docs".
This dataset contains information about registrations and applications filed in Norway. The dataset provides detailed information about the patented inventions, trademarks and designs. This including key player names, key ID-numbers, application dates, status, and relevant events.

Filed patent applications can be kept secret for up to 18 months. The equivalent of 6 months for design. The data set contains only publicly available rights. The data set is dynamic and is continually through the day updated with new rights and by e.g. change in status and other events.

Where patent, trademark and design rights in Norway are linked to Norwegian businesses, many can be uniquely identified by the national organization number.

Useful help to understand our data, when creating integrations

As mentioned above, please remember to cite the source, when displaying data in your service or any other product. It is helpful for users to include a link to further details in the Norwegian Register of Industrial Rights.

When developing, you will find good support in the NIPO Search Service. This regarding how the data can be presented and what it means. You can start here: https://services.patentstyret.no/#/. Once you have opened the Search Service, you can follow the link to specific cases, where you will find good support for understanding the data presented in the API.

Principle or advice when retrieving an actor's portfolio

When using the endpoint /register/v1/IprCasesByCompany – GET, you will receive the portfolio. It is then recommended to retrieve the complete dataset for a case via the domain-specific endpoint /register/Trademark/v1/{applicationId} – GET (an example from trademarks).

Use the variable "applicationNumber": "19940760" from the first endpoint when querying the latter endpoint.

Property in the response objects from API: "caseUrl"
