Patentstyret Open Data MCP Server

Access trademark, patent and design information from your AI assistant.

The Patentstyret Open Data MCP server enables compatible AI applications to search public records, retrieve case details and explore companies’ intellectual property portfolios.

All tools perform read-only lookups. They do not submit applications or modify records.

Data is retrieved from the Norwegian industrial property register maintained by the Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO, Patentstyret).

Connect to the server

There are two alternatives to configure your MCP client:

a) Authenticate using HTTP Header (recommended)

b) Authenticate using URL with key

Some AI Assistants do not allow authenticating using HTTP headers.

Once connected, your client can discover the available tools and their input parameters.

Available tools

Getting started

Describe what you want to find in your AI assistant. For example:

  • “Search for Norwegian trademarks containing for example FJORDLYS and show the status of relevant results.”

  • “Find patent applications where Example AS is the applicant.”

  • “Find registered designs associated with Example AS.”

  • “Show the intellectual property portfolio for the company with Norwegian organisation number [9-digit number] or by company name.”

A typical workflow is to search for cases for example via get_ipr_cases_by_company, identify relevant results and retrieve their full records using the corresponding lookup tool.

Trademarks

search_trademarks

Search trademark applications and registrations in the Norwegian industrial property register.

Use it to check whether a trademark has already been applied for or registered in Norway, to check for similar marks or to list a company’s trademarks.

The endpoints main purpose is to find and extract parts of, or the entire, national register.

Filters combine with AND: a result must satisfy all of them. Each case in the result-list includes the full record.

get_trademark

Retrieve a trademark case using its application number, for example one returned by the portefolio search.

The result includes the full record: text in the mark, type of mark, image, goods and services classes, key dates, priority claims, current legal status and status dates, owner, applicant, agent and more.

Use this tool to check all details in a record, for example to confirm if the trademark is in force or not.

Interpreting trademark results

If a search returns no matching results, this does not mean that a name is available for use or registration. Consider similar names and spellings, how names sound, domain names and company names. The tools described here do not provide a complete clearance search or a legal assessment of the likelihood of confusion.

Patents

search_patents

Search patent applications and registrations/granted patents in the Norwegian industrial property register.

This search does not cover titles, keywords or technical classification.

The endpoints main purpose is to find and extract parts of, or the entire, national register.

Filters combine with AND: a result must satisfy all of them.

Each case in the result-list includes the full record.

get_patent

Retrieve a patent case using the application number, for example one returned by the portefolio search.

The result includes the full case record: the invention title, drawing, International Patent Classification (IPC) code, key dates, priority,  licences, current legal status and status dates, owner, applicant, inventor(s), agent and more.

Use this tool to check all details in a record, for example to confirm if the patent is in force or not.

Designs

search_designs

Search design applications and registrations in the Norwegian industrial property register.

This search does not cover product indications or classification.

The endpoints main purpose is to find and extract parts of, or the entire, national register.

Filters combine with AND: a result must satisfy all of them.

Each case in the result-list includes the full record

get_design

Retrieve a design case using the application number, for example one returned by the portefolio search.

The result includes the full case record: the design, product indications, key dates, priority, liens or licences, current legal status and status dates, owner, applicant, designer(s), agent and more.

Use this tool to check all details in a record, for example to confirm if the design is in force or not.

Company portfolios

get_ipr_cases_by_company

This is a portfolio search. It returns a list of all trademark, patent and design cases in Norway that are owned by the given company or person.

Provide the organisation number, the name, or both. For cases that are or have been granted, the company must be listed in the owner role to match.

Use the returned application numbers with get_trademark, get_patent or get_design to retrieve individual case details.
